Don't Be Afraid To Be A Little Spicy

Yesterday I used "bullshit" in the title of my blog post. I was a little shy about that at first, but I've decided that I don't mind being a little spicy. For those of you trying to decide whether to push bash the limits of a PG rating, consider the following:

  • Determine who your audience is. If it's school kids, keep it clean enough that parents won't object. You're less likely to become the public face of a larger company if you have a reputation for cursing.

  • As of April 12 2009, 6 of the top 10 grossing movies of all time were rated PG-13. In PG-13 movies you can't be TOO graphic, but you can slip in some four letter words.

  • You can use naughty language if you're not afraid to stand out. There's a software company called Atlassian that embraces an "open company, no bullshit" approach. Atlassian is ridiculously successful and growing like a weed; they've grown from $0 to $100M+/year in the last 9 years.
